FOOTPRINT INTRODUCTIONS
Description: This activity is a good way for students to introduce themselves to the class in a fun and interactive way. To start the activity the students trace their own foot and cut it out. They then have the opportunity to add symbols that describe their life. For my footprint I started by using yellow paper because yellow is my favorite color. I included a photo of my dog Riggs. I then but an apple to show that I am going to be a teacher and the Northern logo because that is where I'm obtaining my degree. The corn was cut off a food box because I live on a farm in South Dakota. The photo of iced coffee is to show my love of coffee and to show that I am a barista in my hometown. Next I included a string of Christmas lights because it is my favorite time of year. Lastly I included a cutout of a plane over pom-poms to act as clouds to show my love of traveling.
Extension Activity: I would take this activity and turn it into a writing assignment. Students would create a story of their life by expanding on each symbol and how it related to them. It could also be flipped just a little bit and be used as an interview for older students and their peers. I would pair them up and have them interview each other about the symbols on their footprint. After this they would write about the interview and discuss what they learned about their peer. This would be an even better and more personal way for students to get to know each other.
